Cooley, Hood and Isbell to play benefit show for Terry Pace in Florence, AL on Father’s Day

May 14, 2014 by jennbryant

FLORENCE – Shoals natives and critically-acclaimed songwriters/performers Jason Isbell, Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley are pooling their exceptional talents for a one-night-only concert to benefit their lifelong friend Terry Pace. The trio will headline a fundraiser on Sunday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at the Shoals Theatre. This will be the first time they have played on stage together in several years.

Pace suffered two debilitating strokes in March which required several weeks of hospitalization in Birmingham. He was recently released from the hospital and is recovering at his home in Sheffield. Rehabilitation will be a long, expensive process and the medical costs continue to mount.

Prior to his illness, Pace was the director of UNA’s Office of Communications and Marketing. For the past eight years, he taught freshman composition and sophomore literature in the UNA Department of English. He also led classes on film appreciation and the history of Muscle Shoals music.

The June benefit is the brainchild of Jayne Jackson, event coordinator at UNA. “I knew the community would want to do something to help Terry. There is so much love for him here. The simple fact that these three prominent artists are coming off the road during heavy touring to do this show on a night off sends a significant message of love and respect. Terry has helped a lot of people through the years and now people want to give back to him.”

For the past 30 years Pace has been a central figure in local music and theatrical circles. He is an actor, director, producer, lecturer and music historian who has been active in supporting and writing about the Muscle Shoals music scene.

Tickets for the event go on sale Thursday and will be $75 (VIP) and $30 (general admission). The VIP tickets include a meet and greet with Isbell, Hood and Cooley after the show. Tickets are available at Pegasus Records in Florence or at

Y’all,

October 30, 2013 by Patterson Hood

Greetings from rainy Dubuque, Iowa. A sold out show tonight to kick off our last little run of 2013.
Halloween will be in Chicago at the fantastic Vic Theatre. One of our favorite venues in one of our favorite cities. Expect some special surprises for this Evening With DBT show. (and YES, we will be dressing up for the occasion).

Hope to see a bunch of you this next week and a half out there as DBT rolls into a few great towns for thew last shows we play this year.

The new album is finished and we are working on getting the cover ready. Stay tuned for announcements about title and release date info.

After this tour, I have some solo shows coming up. I’ll be spending some time in the Great Northwest for the holidays and in January. I’ll be doing a residency in Portland at the Doug Fir. Three different Wednesday Night shows in January and definitely three very different shows in store.

Finally I want to send a shout out to everyone I saw in Cleveland last weekend and the fine folks at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I played a Rolling Stones Tribute last Saturday and everyone I met there was unbelievably great. The whole experience has me hitting the road extra fired up and ready to play some great music.

See You at The Rock and Roll Show,

From Hood – July 5, 2012

July 24, 2012 by jennbryant

Y’all:

Been looking forward to this weekend for some time now. Always loved 4th of July. One of the few holidays I actually like.

This weekend I return to Waverly AL for a show at Standard Deluxe. I knew Scott and the fine SD folks back when Cooley and I lived in Auburn (20 years ago, jeez!) and last year’s show there was one of my all time favorite solo shows.
This year I am taking The Downtown Rumblers with me and I also look forward to seeing The Pollies who are opening.
It’s supposed to rain all week there, but is also supposed to clear up in the late afternoon and be a nice 70 degrees saturday night. The BBQ will be great (was last year), the vibe sublime and I’m guaranteeing a fantastic night for all. COME ON OUT! (I’ve heard a rumor that Dexateens are playing a far too rare show later that evening in Auburn.)

In other news, next weekend, DBT is playing (also a rare thing right now) up in the mountains of Wyoming.
The photos look like it’s going to be an absolutely beautiful place and we’ll rock the tops off them mountains.
On the 19th-22nd, The Downtown Rumblers are hitting the road, playing Winston/Salem NC, Camden NJ, and Brooklyn NY.

Hope you’re having a great and safe summer and hope to see all of you very soon.

Y’ALL:

July 24, 2012 by jennbryant

I’m looking forward to seeing some of you out there this next weekend in Richmond, Annapolis and Alexandria.

Fri Jun 15
Richmond VA
THE VIRGINIA ROOM

Sat Jun 16
Annapolis MD
METROPOLITAN KITCHEN & LOUNGE

Sun Jun 17
Alexandria VA
BIRCHMERE

It’s been quite a few years since I played a solo show in Richmond (not counting a couple of fine record store in-stores at Plan 9 and Deep Groove). The Virginia Room looks to be really nice and I always look forward to seeing my many friends in one of my favorite towns.

I’ve never played in Annapolis before, but will try to make up for it by playing twice in one evening (7pm & 10pm). The Birchmere in Alexandria is an absolute landmark and for great reason. It’s been half a decade since last time and I’m really looking forward to playing Father’s Day evening there.

The shows will be a nice change of pace for me, as I’ve been mostly playing with The Downtown Rumblers (and Mystic Rumblers) of late. I plan to preview songs from my upcoming new album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance, as well as a nice variety of songs and stories from years past, (DBT and solo). I’ll probably use my show last year at Standard Deluxe in Waverly as a template, as that was one of my favorite evenings of the year.

Speaking of Waverly. I had so much fun last year that I vowed on stage to come back this year and bring a band I will be doing just that on Saturday, July 7th when I take The Downtown Rumblers for a very special evening of music, story telling and fun.

On other news, Jenn and I are building a new web site for me and it should be ready to launch soon.

This past weekend I went to see Jay Gonzalez‘ album release show at The 40 Watt in Athens. There was a really good crowd and it was one of my favorite evenings in a long time. The show was opened by Jack Logan, who has long been one of my favorite songwriters around and who has just finally started playing out again after a very extended hiatus. Local band The Arcs played a fantastic set of songs that would have been #1 hits in some alternate universe where great songs = massive success.

At midnight, Jay came out with a terrific band and absolutely killed it. We keep him pretty busy so his shows are all too rare, but worth a road trip any time you get the opportunity. If you haven’t heard his amazing new solo album yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. It has been getting rave reviews all over the world and live it may be even better.

SPEAKING OF WHICH:

DBT has announced a few dates for late summer. We are playing so few this year that we really want to make each one extra special. Last year we took part in The Georgia Theatre’s Grand Opening and SOLD OUT both nights. This year we will return there just in time for their first anniversary. Jay Gonzalez will be opening.

Have a great and safe summer and see you all very soon I hope.
